The aim of Mission International is to build the capacity of individuals and communities to improve the lives of vulnerable people. In partnership with local organisations, we aim to alleviate the causes and symptoms of poverty through wholistic development programs encompassing social, physical, economic and personal transformation.
Mission International is currently working in communities throughout the Asia Pacific region through numerous partnerships in India, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The following projects highlight several of Mission International's current development partnerships:

 |
Agriculture and vocational training
Philippines
Mission International together with a local Filipino organisation is providing training for young people disengaged from school and unemployed adults in the urban slums of Manila. Participants are taught effective organic vegetable production and small business skills, which then create income generating activities, sustainable jobs, community participation, and opportunities for health and nutritional education among the poor. Rescuing child labourers
India
Mission International is providing educational aids and materials to children rescued from a life of child labour. Through the inspiring work of a local Indian organisation the rescued children receive a specialised education and participate in a combination of activities which encourage creativity and personal development. The project empowers each child to fulfil their highest potential, and to live and work with dignity, hope and respect. More...

Youth support
Papua New Guinea
Residents of Lae are often subject to violent armed robberies by young men who, due to hunger and unemployment, turn to crime as a means of survival. Mission International has helped establish the Lae City Mission which works with these young men to meet their basic needs and provide vocational training and opportunities to generate their own income. The program also pays for school fees and provides support to break their cycle of crime and poverty.

CASE STUDY: Violet's story
Violet lives in Manila, the Philippines. Together with her husband and three children, she lives in a make-shift hut on a vacant lot without access to running water or other basic necessities. Violet would spend many long hours in back-breaking work as a street sweeper, but her meagre wage was not sufficient to pay the rent required for even a small basic house, or to buy enough food to adequately feed herself and her family. Violet's husband, a casual labourer, could not find regular work, which added to the constant worry she felt at not being able to provide for her children.
A year ago, Violet was introduced to a local organisation known as King's Garden, which provides training and employment opportunities in organic farming. Violet began working at the farm and learning skills in organic farming techniques, and received training to build her own small business selling the organic vegetables grown on the farm at local markets and within her community.
|
Through her involvement with King's Garden, Violet has learned new and valuable skills, and has great pride in her growing business. But more importantly, she is beginning to experience positive changes in all aspects of her life. Her children now attend school, and Violet is looking to move her family into a small house with clean water.

King's Garden is supported by Mission International, and together they continue to transform the local community through this innovative project. Many people, just like Violet, employed by the King's Garden farm have gained the support and skills to end the cycle of suffering for themselves, their families and provide hope within their communities.
